On Friday, retired United States Lieutenant General, and former National Security Advisor to US President Donald Trump, Michael T. Flynn pleaded guilty to one count of making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and agreed to cooperate with the special counsel investigation led by Robert S. Mueller III.
The false statements made by Flynn regarded the nature of his December 2016 contact with then-Russian Ambassador to the United States Sergey Kislyak. Flynne first denied having asked Kislyak to arrange a mild Russian reaction to the sanctions which had been imposed on 28 December 2016 by Barack Obama. It also turns out that Flynne did ask Kislyak to delay or vote against a UN resolution about Israel, though he had denied this earlier as well.
Flynn is the fourth Trump associate to either be indicted or plead guilty, following Paul Manafort and Rick Gates, who were both indicted on multiple counts, and George Papadopoulos, who pleaded guilty to making false statements to FBI agents as well.
On Saturday, Trump denied any collusion with the Russian government.
