It is very common to see older people with bald patches on their head. This must mean that baldness is associated with age, the older you get, the balder you are. Well, that is partly true and partly false. Age and baldness do not necessarily go hand in hand. Baldness can affect one at any age no matter the sex. Some old people still have a full crown of hair. So, let’s see a few facts about our hair and baldness.
The standard number of hairs on a scalp range from a hundred thousand (100 000) to a hundred and fifty thousand (150 000) individual hair strands. By nature, humans lose 50 to 100 hairs from their heads every single day. Imagine if that hair was not replaced, you would be bald in 4 years. Generally baldness is due to a malfunction by the scalp to generate more new hair strands. As you continue to shed hair, it will start thinning before you are declared bald.
There are a number of causes attached to balding. The most common is genetics. With age, there are fewer hair strands that are generated. Although it affects both sexes, this occurs more in males than in females. 25% of all men will start experiencing balding in their late 20’s to early 30’s. Half of the male population get bald or are undergoing balding in their 50’s. Women also lose hair but at a slower rate than men probably due to the sex hormone testosterone present in males.
Other causes are a result of reactions to the physical or chemical changes in our body. Diet, diseases, stress, medications and shock can lead to loss of hair. Young people are mostly affected by a disease of the skin oil glands called seborrhea. The glands tend to produce more sebum making the skin oilier. The sebum makes clog the hair such that it is unable to obtain nutrients for its growth. Hair will be lost before it has even turned grey.
Hair loss may be a side effect of some medication. Chemotherapy, contraceptives, anti-depressants as well as steroids are examples that can cause hair loss. Medications tend to alter the chemical environment of the body. There may be an increase in hormones or inhibition of processes which will affect hair growth. Normally, when the medication is stopped, the hair will grow again.
Poor nutrition is also a factor in baldness. Proteins are essential for they make up enzymes and hormones. Vitamins combine with proteins in the production of enzymes and in the metabolism of chemical reactions. Carbohydrate and fats are useful for energy for reactions in the body as well as for the cell structure and cell membrane. Other trace elements like copper, iodine, and zinc play important roles in the body. These elements can only be found from the food that we eat, as our bodies does not produce it like plants do.
As you can see, age and baldness don’t really go hand in hand. So, it’s not all about age, but also about the healthy state of your body and mind.
